Eraring Residents Association Alternative Site Submission for the Sports and Recreation Centre

The Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre is closed due to the risk of the Origin Energy ash dam wall collapsing under adverse climatic and seismic conditions. Origin Energy has agreed to fund the development of a new Sport and Recreation Centre.

With the demise of the coal industry, Lake Macquarie City Council is keen to develop the Visitor Economy and has suggested the NSW Office of Sport incorporate a Centre of Excellence for Sailing to maximise use of the proposed $30 million State Significant Development (SSD). An amendment to the ISEPP is currently being proposed to facilitate a new Sport and Recreation on the shores of Lake Eraring. We oppose the proposed amendment and made a submission during the public exhibition period.

As stated in our original submission, we are of the view that Lake Eraring is not an appropriate site for such a development for many reasons, including that the site is unsuitable for water activities. The proposed site at Lake Eraring is shallow, muddy and environmentally sensitive.

As such, we recommended an alternative location on Morisset Peninsula for the new Sport and Recreation Centre.
