SAVE ERARING WETLANDS WELCOMES YOU
SAVE ERARING WETLANDS AT A GLANCE
Save Eraring Wetlands is driven to protect the Eraring area from over development. For many years Eraring has been protected by Environmental Living zoning laws which are designed to protect land with special environmental or scenic values.
The Eraring Residents Association aims to protect these zonings so that our living, bushland and aquatic environments are maintained for the benefits of residents, visitors and future generations.
THE DEVELOPMENT JUST MAKES THE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES WORSE
The coal ash problem isn't being addressed
Wetlands to the north and south, Lake Macquarie to the east and an environmental buffer zone to
the west, Eraring is unique.
The southern wetland system, Lake Eraring / Muddy Lake is listed in NSW as a State Significant
Wetland. Neighbouring land is zoned E4 Environmental Living appropriate to the quiet eco-friendly
bushland area. It is not suited to the development of a Sport and Recreation Centre with commercial
sporting facilities.
Under the Environmental Impact Statement 1 which permitted the Eraring Power Station, the 1150
hectares acquired is to be managed as a buffer zone for the benefit of native fauna. Due to a toxic coal ash dam at risk of collapsing, the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre is
closed. Power Station owner, Origin, has a deal with the NSW Government to give away buffer zone
land and build a new Sport and Recreation Centre.
It appears Origin is unable or unwilling to fix the ash dam safety to the satisfaction of the Office of
Sport. Alternatively, the Office of Sport is focussed on a new bigger Centre with expanded facilities to rent
to sporting teams and other organisations.
The ash dam continues to be used and is being expanded. If the ash dam collapses under adverse weather circumstances it will create a tsunami like 3 metre storm surges across the Lake and dump millions of tons of toxic water and ash into Lake Macquarie
and associated wetlands.
The Eraring Residents Association aims to protect our bushland and aquatic environments and
maintain the rural nature of the area for the benefit of residents, visitors and future generations.
We will contest Origin’s ability to give buffer zone land away.
We are collaborating with other organisations to protest the NSW Government and Origin’s careless
attitude to coal ash safety.
